We Did A Thing

We tend to be a restless couple. We need a project, something to do. Since we've been married we've lived in two different states states and five different houses. Chris has always been interested in real estate and after reading "Poor Dad, Rich Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki, his mind has been at work to find the next project that would actually benefit us financially. About a year ago we moved to Manchaca, a city zoned in the county outside of city limits, and with that comes a lot of freedom and limited restrictions. We've talked about building a tiny house in the backyard, possibly for a guest house or something for Chris to work in since he's been working from home for over a year. But that always seemed like a big investment for a house that's not our forever home, and then we ran the risk of not getting our money back when we go to sell later. We looked at buying a rental, but the Austin housing market made that pretty challenging along with the burden of carrying two mortgages while getting a rental remodeled.

Obviously this is a condensed version of about a thousand conversations and ideas, but we landed on trying to find an Airstream with the idea of setting it up in our backyard as an Air B &B. For the last few months, we've been searching to find the right one. We looked on Facebook market place, Craig's list, and RV trader. So many were too big or in rough shape or totally gutted inside, but right before Labor Day weekend we found one we felt like would be a good one for us, for now. And we named her Mabel.

She's a 1972 Airstream Ambassador, and she's twenty-nine feet long. The previous owners had her for seventeen years and had done some updating of their own along the way. There were remnants of the original Airstream (like the entire bathroom), but they did a lot of painting and some updating that wasn't well executed. We are still very much in the throws of remodeling, but our goal is to get her up and running as a rental, work space, and an extra guest room sometime in October. And we're going to do our best to document things alone the way. So welcome to our project! We don't know what we're doing, but we're going to figure it out as we go (kind of how we do life most of the time). Buckle up, here we go!
